As Moseby remarks of a sporting event, “nobody’s winning … one side is just losing slower than the other. Early in the film, Harry takes on Arlene Iverson a former B-movie actress played by Janet Ward on as a client. ![]() The feelings of bitterness and emptiness in the modern Chandleresque protagonist originate not only in the “public” sphere of the strange, increasingly convoluted case, but in his private life as well (boyhood trauma, a broken marriage). Like Polanski in Chinatown or Altman in The Long Goodbye, in his revisionist film noir, Penn also allows the 1940s classic genre to pervade the complex reality of the 1970s. Eight years after the key New Hollywood film Bonnie and Clyde, Arthur Penn and Gene Hackman reunited to collaborate on what was to become one of the most undervalued films of the decade. Private detective and former football player Harry Moseby gets hired on to what seems a standard missing person case, as a former Hollywood actress whose only major roles came thanks to being married to a studio mogul wants Moseby to find and return her daughter. Night Moves (1975) - (Original Trailer) Original trailer for Arthur Penn’s highly-regarded private-eye drama Night Moves, 1975, starring Gene Hackman and Jennifer Warren, from an original screenplay by Alan Sharp. The more the weary cynic tries to get under the surface of the seemingly simple case, the harder it is for him to find his bearings among the lies and deceptions that surround him. Harry Moseby (Gene Hackman), a worn-out private detective, is hired to look for a 16-year-old girl who has run away from the luxury home of her mother, formerly a small-time actress in Los Angeles. Arthur Penn's direction is taut, evoking the atmosphere of classic noir thrillers such as THE MALTESE FALCON and DOUBLE INDEMNITY to great effect. Hard-nosed private investigator Harry Moseby (Gene Hackman), to distract himself from a rapidly deteriorating marriage, takes a case from an aging B-movie queen (Janet Ward) to locate her runaway. Melanie Griffith is also a standout in her movie debut as Delly, the promiscuous Lolita whom Harry is sent to find. Hackman is excellent as the somewhat soft-boiled detective who's job is making him increasingly paranoid. The inexperienced gumshoe finds himself totally out of his league as he is caught in the middle of this dangerous web of lies and murder. Soon Harry finds himself embroiled in a mystery that leads to smuggling rings, double-crosses, and seductions. Instead of a purely macho hero, Moseby is a man. I really liked how the film is shaped around a character that feels realistically flawed. I am a big fan of this genre and this is somewhere in between the looseness of Altman’s The Long Goodbye and the depth of Polanski’s Chinatown. Days later she turns up dead and Harry suspects foul play. Night Moves is a great off-beat private investigator film. He locates the girl and brings her back home, despite the girl's protests. When a wealthy woman hires him to track down her missing daughter, Harry believes it to be just another missing-persons case. Most of his cases are routine and very dull.
